Connect Orvo to ChatGPT

ChatGPT can use Orvo as a custom MCP app on chatgpt.com. It takes a few more steps than other assistants, and what you can do depends on your ChatGPT plan, so check the requirements first.

Business, Enterprise & Edu Last verified 10 October 2026
Check your plan first. OpenAI documents full MCP support (reading and making changes) for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu on the web. Pro accounts can connect MCP apps in developer mode with read and fetch permissions only, which covers Orvo’s read-only tools. Custom MCP apps are web only: they don’t work in the ChatGPT mobile apps. OpenAI is changing these menus, so the labels below may differ slightly on your account.

Who this is for

Teams that run on ChatGPT Business or Enterprise and want answers grounded in their Orvo relationship data, and Pro users who want read-only lookups.

Before you start

  • ChatGPT on the web (chatgpt.com). Business, Enterprise or Edu for read and change; Pro for read only.
  • On Business, Enterprise and Edu: a workspace admin must allow developer mode and custom MCP apps in the workspace permissions. On Business only admins and owners can use developer mode.
  • An Orvo account with web access (the free trial works). ChatGPT signs in to Orvo through your browser; it doesn’t accept a personal token.

Your Orvo MCP server URL.

Add Orvo as a custom MCP app

  1. Workspace admins (Business, Enterprise, Edu): in Workspace Settings → Permissions & Roles → Connected Data, allow developer mode and creating custom MCP connectors for the people who need it.
  2. Turn on developer mode for yourself: Settings → Apps → Advanced settings → Developer mode.
  3. Go to Apps and choose Create (on accounts that already have OpenAI’s newer Plugins page, use Plugins → + and Add custom MCP server instead).
  4. Enter Orvo as the name, paste https://www.getorvo.com/api/mcp as the server URL and choose OAuth as the authentication.
  5. Read OpenAI’s risk notice and confirm, then scan the tools (Scan Tools) or create the app. A window opens on Orvo.
  6. Sign in to Orvo. On Business, Enterprise and Edu, choose Read and make changes here and click Authorise & Connect: ChatGPT keeps the list of tools it finds during this sign-in, and a read-only sign-in leaves Orvo’s change tools out of the app for everyone. On Pro, choose Read only (recommended).
  7. In a chat, pick Orvo from the apps menu or mention it with @, then ask your question.
People who connect to the app later can still choose Read only (recommended) on Orvo’s page; Orvo then refuses the change tools for them. If you created the app with a read-only sign-in, disconnect Orvo, connect again with Read and make changes, and refresh the app’s tools. New apps start as drafts that only you can use. On Business, Enterprise and Edu, only admins and owners can publish an app for the whole workspace (Workspace settings → Apps → Drafts → Publish). When an admin publishes it, ChatGPT keeps a fixed copy of Orvo’s tool list; if Orvo adds tools later, an admin has to refresh and republish the app.

Read only, or read and make changes

ChatGPT signs in through Orvo’s page, where you choose Read only (recommended) or Read and make changes. The sign-in used when the app is created decides which Orvo tools the app has, so create it with Read and make changes (Business, Enterprise, Edu); each person can then still connect read only. On Pro, ChatGPT only allows read and fetch tools anyway, so choose read only.

ChatGPT asks for confirmation before tools that change data, and you can turn individual tools off in the app’s settings. Enterprise and Edu admins can also switch individual actions on or off for the workspace.

Either way, deleting never erases anything: People and notes go to Recently deleted for 30 days, daily limits cap how much an assistant can change, and changes to a person (their profile, tags, notes and linked actions) show in their activity as made via AI assistant. How Orvo keeps you in control.

Things to ask ChatGPT

Use Orvo: who are my most overdue contacts this week, and why does each matter? Works read-only
Brief me on everyone from Globex I know before tomorrow’s workshop. Works read-only
What did I write about the partnership with Northbridge? Works read-only
List my active opportunities with their next steps. Works read-only
Log a note on James Miller: agreed to co-host the March event. Needs read and make changes

Troubleshooting

I don’t see Developer mode or Create
On Business, Enterprise and Edu an admin must allow it in workspace permissions first, and on Business only admins and owners can use it. On personal plans, availability depends on the plan: OpenAI documents read-only MCP for Pro.
ChatGPT asks for an API key
ChatGPT doesn’t support custom API keys or bearer tokens for MCP apps. Choose OAuth and sign in to Orvo instead.
Orvo’s new tools don’t appear
Open the app’s settings and refresh its tools. For a published workspace app, an admin needs to refresh and republish it.
Orvo can’t add notes or make other changes, even with “Read and make changes”
The app was probably created with a read-only sign-in, so ChatGPT never saw Orvo’s change tools. Disconnect Orvo, connect again choosing Read and make changes, then refresh the app’s tools (and republish it if it’s a published workspace app).
The sign-in page asks me to log in to Orvo first
That’s expected. Sign in with your Orvo account in that browser window and you’ll land on the Connect … to Orvo page. Pick an access level and click Authorise & Connect.
I chose the wrong access level
Disconnect Orvo in your assistant (or sign out of the connector) and connect again. The Orvo sign-in page appears again and you can pick the other option.
Orvo refuses every request although I signed in
Check that your Orvo account is active (trial not expired, subscription current) and that it has web access. The mobile-only plan doesn’t include MCP connections.
“Too many requests” or a daily limit message
Orvo allows about 60 MCP requests a minute per account, so wait a minute and try again. Daily limits on changes reset at midnight UTC.

ChatGPT and Orvo: FAQ

Can I use Orvo with ChatGPT Plus or Free?

OpenAI’s current documentation names Business, Enterprise and Edu for full MCP support and Pro for read-only MCP in developer mode. It doesn’t document custom MCP apps for Free or Plus, so we can’t promise they work there.

Does it work in the ChatGPT mobile app?

No. OpenAI says custom MCP apps are available on ChatGPT on the web only.

Can I use an Orvo token instead of signing in?

No. ChatGPT only supports OAuth sign-in (or no authentication) for custom MCP apps, so it always signs in through Orvo’s page.

Can the assistant read my emails or calendar through Orvo?

No. The Orvo MCP server works with your People, notes, actions, opportunities, tags, groups and relationship insights. Synced emails and calendar events are not exposed, and it can’t send messages.

What happens to things the assistant deletes?

They go to Recently deleted in Orvo, with their notes and actions, and can be restored for 30 days. Deleting is only possible on a connection you set to “Read and make changes”.
